From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.

A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.

Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

My mum sadly passed this October, her death was sudden and unexpected, as Mums eldest child I was made next of kin. I felt pushed in at the deep end and had no idea how to even start planning a funeral. I live local, so I decided to pop into T L Cobbold funeral directors, and I couldn't have been more pleased that I did. The staff were highly professional and very sympathetic. They guided me step by step through everything I needed to do and all the different options available to make my mums day perfect. As I said I had no idea what I was doing but the staff at all times were respectful, professional and patient with me even when I decided mums book of service, and then changed it, and changed it again. I called time and time again to ask questions and was always met with a friendly and helpful voice on the other end of the phone. We made several appointments for family to go and see Mum in the Chapel of rest working around all of the family's work schedules. I wanted to have jewellery made with mums fingerprint, and the staff were more than happy to use the mould kit i brought to provide me with two perfect moulds to use. No request i made was ever an issue, and the staff were always happy to help. T L Cobbold picked a wonderful celebrant who visited me at my home to learn about who Mum was. We chose huntingdon crematorium to have mums service held at. The day was perfect, and the location was beautiful. I actually couldn't be more proud of myself for giving Mum the send-off she deserved, but I wouldn't have been able to do so without all the staff from T L Cobbold. Thank you so much to you all for all the support and kindness we received at such a sad time.

Posting this on behalf of my wife:

‘I have just had an exceptionally bad experience at T L Cobbold in St Neots.

My Nanna’s funeral was three weeks ago and I was nominated as the person to collect her ashes. First, they hadn’t collected the ashes and weren’t sure why and so they had to go and collect them yesterday. They had messed up the administration and hadn’t put my name on the form for collection, requiring a number of calls back and forth to get the correct permission in place.

After that palaver I was extremely grateful that one of the staff - Lorraine had agreed to stay later so I could collect Nanna’s ashes after work and I had three phone calls with her confirming the time I would arrive, my name and collection details etc.

At no point during any of the phone calls was I asked to bring any information with me. Rushing out of work, I forgot my purse and traveled for an hour and a half to the funeral directors, calling Lorraine on the way to confirm the appointment, still no mention of any requirements.

Upon arrival at the agreed time, Lorraine greeted me by name at the door and let me in. I reiterated that I was there to collect my Nanna’s ashes. She took us into the room and then asked me for ID which I didn’t have.

Her tone then became very accusatory and she wanted to phone my uncle to confirm who I was, which I didn’t mind. I offered to call him myself there and then, to which she said ‘well you could be calling anyone couldn’t you’. She then proceeded to grab the ashes off the table and run out of the room with them, as if I was some kind of ill-intentioned thief. After getting my uncle on the phone, she was satisfied she had confirmed my identity and I said she hadn’t asked me to bring any ID, and she argued saying she had. She had not.

She then began to refer to my Nanna as my ‘aunt’ repeatedly and felt the need to remind me while pointing at the urn that ‘this was a person once’. I must admit I got angry with her at this point and said ‘yes, my person’ to which she said ‘well who was she to you’ and I said ‘my Nanna’, as I had told her repeatedly on the previous three occasions.

The ID I understand and support, but the accusations, the flinging of the ashes and the general tone and attitude of this woman was unbelievable and the absolute last thing I needed after losing my Nanna. Who else would turn up at the agreed time and place and answer to the same name as me?! It was so ridiculous. I’m appalled.’
