From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

John was so caring and helpful in creating a superb send off for my mother. Just as he had for my father a few years earlier.
He helped me (and other family members) make the decisions needed in a timely manner, providing suggestions and kept me updated on the progress of the occasion.
Michael called before the day of the service to confirm the starting point, sequence of the procession and service.
Everyone provided a very positive professional service at what was a difficult time for the family.
From the moment I met John.. he was very polite and caring. Everything was done in a professional manner. Everyone who played a part in my mother's funeral was so lovely.
John was very approachable, understanding and sympathetic and arranged everything very professionally.
Before the funeral the itinerary was discussed thoroughly.
The funeral itself was absolutely faultless.
All attending the funeral were very impressed.
We would definitely recommend S. P. Astley Funeral Directors.

I can't recommend Astleys highly enough. They arranged both my parents funerals and everything was perfect despite one being in the middle of the first lockdown. John and Michael ensured that everything went smoothly in a warm and professional way. They just took all the worry away for us which was invaluable at such a difficult time.
