From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

Sadly I had to say goodbye to my Dad
This was the first time I had to deal with something like this
Charlotte at your Epping branch in Essex was very helpful, understanding and very supportive.
She help me every step of the way, and was always there at the end of the phone with help and advice.
Even if it was just to cry and let off some stress
Just would like to say thank you to all of the team at D C Poultons
Maxine and the team at D C Poulton & Sons were so kind , professional , supportive and helpful from first point of contact to day of funeral
They made the whole process bearable and the day under the circumstances couldn’t have gone better
I would have no hesitation in recommending them
As I’ve said from start to finish the service was impeccable
It means a great deal when people take the time to share their experience and to highlight individuals in the team who have made a difference. I am glad that we were able to provide you with the dignity and respect needed at this time.
The member of staff I dealt with was warm and friendly, compassionate and knowledgeable. I was talked through the fundamental processes of funeral arrangements and supported to make informed decisions. No request was too much trouble. I did not feel rushed, or pressured to purchase any additional services. A seamless operation at a difficult time. The arrangements culminated in the perfect celebration! Thank you.
We are grateful of you using our services to provide something special for your loved one. I am pleased it all went well for you and the family. The team will be very pleased to hear that their care and support made a difference to your family.
The service provided for my mother (Pat Crew) was considerate, sensitive and extremely professional. The level of support provided by Charlotte (Epping Office) and the celebrant was exceptional and I feel that I have made new friends.
At any point up to the cremation day, nothing was too much trouble for anyone involved which made the whole thing so much easier. Thank you
We are incredibly grateful that you took the time to leave us this review. It’s good to hear that you and the family received helpful guidance through this time and that we managed to make the day run as smoothly as possible for you.
Charlotte is very kind and caring and nothing is too much trouble for her. Had a lot of contact with her both before my mum's funeral, and since. She calls to make sure I am okay.
Thank you for these lovely words, it means so much to the whole team. Your family continues to be in our thoughts and we are honoured to have been able to give you the service you needed
