We are W Thorp & Son Funeral Directors based on the Broadway high street. You and your family will always be our top priority. We understand how emotional and difficult it can be to lose a loved one and you can rest assured that we will look after them with utmost care and respect.
However you wish to say goodbye to your loved one, we will arrange it. We will guide you through every step and ensure all the details are taken care of personally. If there is anything we can do to help make you comfortable, please do not hesitate to let us know.
Established in 1838, our original Leigh on Sea funeral home was founded by "Chippie Thorp" on Leigh Hill Road.
The building was a beautiful 'listed' property, therefore it could not be altered to meet the needs of the families that surround us, which is why we moved to new premises with a bigger team and improved facilities.
You can call us at any time you need, we are here for you.
We are proud to be part of Dignity Funerals, a collection of the UKs finest funeral directors, with each and every one committed to setting superior standards.
Many Dignity funeral directors have been part of the local community for generations and it is a privilege to serve those who live beside us. Our rich and lengthy heritage ensures we can deliver our service with local knowledge and unparalleled expertise.
With two packages available, we will be able to arrange the funeral you have in mind for your loved one.
If you’re looking for a traditional or contemporary funeral with a service, you should consider our Attended Funeral. If you want us to arrange a simple cremation without mourners present, our Unattended Funeral may better suit your needs.
View our Standardised Price List, Additional Options Price List and Crematoria Price List.
Our Attended Funeral includes care of your loved one, a Park Coffin, a service at the place of committal which can be personalised as required for your loved one, followed by a burial or cremation.
The Bristol Funeral allows you to celebrate the life of your loved one with a special service at one of our local venues. The service is followed by a dignified but unattended cremation at a crematorium chosen by us.
A range of beautiful venues throughout Bristol make up the Silver, Gold and Platinum packages that constitute The Bristol Funeral. These range from converted barns in rural surroundings, to local sports clubs and more stately country residences. Find out more about what The Bristol Funeral offers below.
Please ask in branch for details of the available venues.
Our Unattended Funeral will best suit your needs if you want to arrange a simple and straightforward cremation without a service or ceremony, allowing you and your loved one's friends and family to commemorate them in your own way.
Choose from a variety of options, including headstones and urns to memorial plaques, vases, statues, jewellery and plenty more. With a Memorial, you can create a tribute that especially reflects the life, love and cherished memories of your loved one.

From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

W Thorp and Sons was most helpful, caring and compassionate from beginning to end of arranging the funeral and really helpful and comforting on the day of the funeral. Would highly recommend.
From the moment we got in contact with W Thorp & Son to arrange the funeral of my mother, Doreen Wickens, we were treated with kindness and respect. Lynn Geast the Branch official in leigh was exceptionally helpful and kept us informed every step of the way. She also contacted us afterwards to check everything went will. On the day the funeral director was efficient and also showed respect.
All in all the day went smoothly and we very much appreciate the help we had, thank you to all who were involved.
It is always good to hear that individual members of our team have provided a service to you to the best of their ability. We know how special each person is and aim to convey this in all aspects of our work from the arrangements to the day of the service. My first dealings with a Funeral Directors and was not sure what expectations I should have. The local team in Leigh were always helpful, understanding and very supportive. The whole process was relatively easy and support was provided throughout. Special mention for Lynn. The funeral arrangements were seamless and we felt supported throughout the day. The staff on the day were excellent. Many thanks
