From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

Outstanding service from Powells nothing was too much trouble ..Allison specially was compassionate and understanding .. As for celebrant Emma ,she is so gentle and caring a beautiful and fitting service for our dear mum June thank you
Impeccable, respectful efficient service. I'd never organised a funeral before and Tayla made the process really straightforward for me.I would wholeheartedly recommend Powell's Funeral Directors.
Nothing could have been more straight forward from the moment Powell’s took our mother, Marlene into their care. The kindness and compassion forwarded to our family was first class. The staff especially Andrew, on the day and firstly Debbie and then Nicky at the Hoddesdon branch were just brilliant. As for Emma, the celebrant, absolutely outstanding, wonderfully compassionate and caring, the way Emma adapted to our particular requests was both comforting and detailed enabling us as a family to concentrate on making our mums service the memorable one it was. We can’t thank you all enough xx
I cannot express how AMAZING Powells have been in organising our beautiful mums funeral. Alison has been amazing right from the start, nothing was to much trouble, from having mums finger nails painted, cutting a lock of hair, finger prints, sorting our visits, giving us time to grieve and recoup before leaving. She is a truly wonderful compassionate lady. Andrew explained everything in detail about the day of the funeral and was an absolute gentleman in his treatment towards all the family. Nothing was to much trouble, we were never rushed or made to feel a nuisance. The whole ceremony from start to finish was faultless. I am forever indebted to these amazing people and their colleagues for making the whole process for us as a family a worry free situation.
Zoe was our celebrant and she was an absolute star, again keeping us updated every step of the way.
There are not enough words to express how grateful we are that Powells played a huge part in helping us lay our wonderful mum to rest.
The funeral directors were recommended by Snowdrop Care Home for their caring professional ways
My wife and I cannot recommend Powells enough. What was a stressful time Alison sympathetically guided us along the practicalities of the arrangements. On the day of the funeral again the staff treated us with kindness and guided us throughout the service 💕
