From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

Steven Near provided a compassionate, caring and helpful service at a hard time for me and my family. They provided all information we could need and helped guide us to an arrangement that suited our needs.
From the initial visit to make the funeral arrangements, the funeral itself and helping us with the burial, everyone was both professional and caring at every step.
IN COMPASSIONATE COMPANY
Well what can be said about this company and Bev the office girl and there lack of compassion in what's a very upsetting time.
We have recently lost my mum and as Steve Near had sorted the funeral arrangements for my son some 13 years ago, so I decided to go back to them.
BIG MISTAKE as I have had the unfortunate pleasure of Bev the office girl.
My sister was arranging my mums funeral as she knew what my mother wanted but is was me who was covering the cost of the funeral.
I went into there office today to give them the green form and settle some of the invoice.
I asked about one small part of the cremation to which I was told that my sister was the signed client and my opinion did not matter.
I reminded Bev that if my opinion did not matter then I would not be settling the invoice and asked for the green form back to which she refused.
As the sole executor for my mother I found her approach in compassionate and it felt like it was all about the MONEY not about any care or understanding.
I have now found a lovely family funeral director called JASON ROCKS of freeman St Grimsby and his sympathetic approach in dealing with a very upsetting time was reassuring.
Bev has phoned me with her lovely manner NOT and told me she has posted my mum's green form allegedly and ( second class ) know doubt to try and delay my mum's cremation.
I have a recording of the NOT SO NICE PHONE CALL to which on Monday when my media guys are in the office will ask them to do a podcast/YouTube link showing how bad Bev of STEVEN NEAR ownd by EMBERSON was and is.
I can only ask please don't put yourself though the same upset that me and my wife have had to deal with today from this SHOCKING COMPANY at the hands of Bev the office girl.
EMBERSON is a large company buying up all the small independent funeral directors and its all about the CASH and PROFITS. Care and compassion has gone totally from this company.
THERE REPLY SHOWS HOW BAD THIS COMPANY IS AS THEY HAVE A DEPARTMENT FOR COMPLAINTS.
I OWN A COMPANY AND MY CUSTOMERS WHO ARE UNHAPPY SPEAK TO ME THE OWNER NOT A DEPARTMENT THAT SHOWS THEY JUST DONT CARE ABOUT THE CUSTOMERS ONLY THE MONEY THEY CAN GET OUT OF YOU.
MY MUMS CREMATION IS ON FRIDAY AND JASON ROCKS HAS VISITED MY HOME 4 TIMES OUT OF HOURS TO GIVE THE VERY BEST PERSONAL TOUCH AS YES ITS A JOB ITS A BUSINESS BUT HE CARES UNLIKE THIS SHOWER OF S...T OF A COMPANY.
CUSTOMERS PLEASE STAY WELL CLEAR OF STEVEN NEAR
