From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

I cannot express deeply enough how wonderful and caring Blake and Horlock (Enfield branch) have been during a very difficult time.
Friendly yet professional, explanatory and supportive, giving choice and gently recommending what may be more suitable and so offering options but allowing us to make our own choice.
From the first phone call to Tracey, meeting Dee, meeting Roya and Caroline we were met with respect, empathy and above all understanding.
Communication was second to none and all questions and queries answered with compassion.
Dee went above and beyond to support us as a family and Roya, the celebrant was gentle caring and extremely experienced in supporting us with wording and delivering the eulogy for us.
I could go on and on with the most positive words but mainly want to thank everyone involved in helping us arrange the funeral at such a difficult time.
Highly recommend Blake and Horlock for all your needs. Tracey, the manager has a beautiful team of staff who clearly are passionate within their roles.
Thank you all so much.
We can’t thank Dee enough for her support and compassion that she showed during such a difficult time. From start to finish, she handled everything with care, sensitivity, and professionalism. Nothing was ever too much trouble, and she truly went above and beyond to make sure my sister’s farewell was just as we had hoped. In the middle of our grief, she brought calm, kindness, and clarity — and for that, we are so grateful. Highly recommended. Thankyou Dee. Xx
We used Blake and Horlock as my nan had a funeral plan with them, from the first time we called and Dee answered we knew Nan made the perfect choice!
They went above and beyond for us, nothing was too much trouble! Dee showed true empathy and care towards us all, making it so personal. When we went in to discuss everything it felt like Dee was just a friend/family member which instantly put us at ease.
They really are special especially Dee, thank you so much!
From the very first meeting Dee made us feel that Mum's funeral was in safe hands. Everything was perfect on the day, which took a huge weight off our shoulders. Thank you Dee & the whole team.
Like to thank Dignity (Blake & Horlock) funeral directors for the professional and dignified way they conducted the preparation and execution of our Father Nearhos Kakouri's Funeral.
A social shout Out for Dee Foreman and Caroline and her team on the Day of the funeral.
Kind regards
