From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

The funeral service was great and they really gave my amazing Nanna a great send off, however the service we have received after this has been absolutely disgraceful. Firstly, the Ash Casket they gave us for my lovely Nanna had a nail sticking out the front of it and holes in the bottom where the screws had been put in the wrong place.
They rectified this, but the new box had the incorrect date that my Nanna passed away and also an incorrectly spelled NAME.
How DARE you misspell my Nanna’s first name, the funeral was over a month ago, we as a family have been through enough and shouldn’t have to chase you about errors that shouldn’t have occurred in the first place. I’m absolutely disgusted by this.
*Update* Thanks for the copied and pasted response that bears no relevance to my review. We’ve already made you aware of this on multiple occasions, I just wanted to leave a review to let everyone know that it happened in the first place. Thanks for not charging us as a “gesture of goodwill” for the replacement Ash Casket though, after it was your error that misspelled my Nanna’s first name in the first place, someone who was with you in the chapel of rest for 2 weeks and you can’t even get her first name right, embarrassment.
Thank you for taking time to leave us a review. I am sorry to hear you are unhappy with the service provided. If you would like to discuss this further, or escalate your concerns, please contact our Complaint Resolutions Team on 0800 783 7171. They are available Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. You can also send them an email at complaint.resolutions@dignityuk.co.uk. Thank you.
Absolutely superb. I can't fault any aspect of the service they provided.
From first contact, John was genuine, thoughtful, respectful and dignified, and personified everything that is good about Forsters.
The ladies in the office, Miriam and Alison were just so effortlessly friendly. Every time I spoke with them and contacted them via email, their attentiveness and willingness to ensure everything was perfect was so reassuring and I feel strongly that they should receive some sort of recognition as they really were superb advocates for the business.
The funeral celebrant, Graeme was amazing. Within 5 minutes of first meeting him I felt like I'd known him for years. He has a very natural style of putting people at ease and feeling comfortable to feel able to open-up. Easily one of the hardest jobs to do surely? Yet he did it with respect, diligence and where appropriate even a little humour. The service itself was perfect and Graeme was the driving force behind this. He is a credit to himself and his profession.
John and the pallbearers were incredible and these gentlemen were very attentive when it came to guiding myself and my son on how to carry the coffin. A small gesture you might think yet it went a long way and was very much appreciated. The drivers were also excellent and conducted themselves with grace and dignity.
On behalf of my wife and family, I'd like to pay my respects and offer up my sincere gratitude to Forsters Funeral Directors for providing the very best service at one of the most difficult times of our lives and for supporting us every step of the way.
Thank you.
