From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

A Hazel & Son in Erdington were absolutely amazing and thoughtful in all aspects of my dad’s funeral Jade and Sarah were phenomenal and were respectful in every way. My Dad looked so at peace in the Chapel of rest and they took care of everything with us. Because of this myself and my wife will be getting our funerals with A.Hazels. Your company should be very proud of the service you provide and also the staff that you hire…..each one is an asset to you. Thank you.
This is the first time I have had to use a funeral company due to the death of my father. I chose Hazel & Sons as they have been a reputable company on my local high street for many years and are local to me. From the very first phone call to them I knew I had made the right decision in choosing them absolute professional’s who put me at ease and explained everything every step of the way. I was given very good advice and kept up to date with regular phone calls staff I saw were very compassionate respectful and helpful also honest although it was a sad day it was also a beautiful one thanks to them.
Thank you for your online review. am pleased to hear that you found our staff to be professional and respectful. Your feedback is always valuable to us.
I couldn't recommend A Hazel and Sons Funeral Directors enough. As expected funerals are an emotional and tricky time but I really felt personally supported by the staff in Erdington. They were patient, kind, sincere, knowledgeable and helpful. They were easy to contact when needed and communication was excellent. I was particularly impressed with how they supported my younger brother through the planning process (he is only 18 and the staff were particularly thoughtful when it came to his needs, especially Sarah).
The funeral itself ran smoothly, even when having to go over to Lodge Hill Crem from Erdington. The staff were accommodating and professional. Myself and my brother had many comments about how beautiful the service was and it was a fitting tribute to our Mom. Many thanks to all the staff involved.
