From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

In the last month I have used Harrisons Salters Road to arrange my wife's funeral. She had a prepaid plan in place with them that was very easy to trigger.
They were sympathetic and very well organised with lots of good advice. We mainly dealt with Josie, who was excellent and knows what she is talking about, so listen to her.
We arranged flowers and order of services through them both of which were beautiful.
In conclusion excellent service around.
We can't praise Harrison's enough. Jerry from the Gosforth branch was an absolute godsend and took away all the stress of organising a funeral. From day one he arranged everything down to the last detail, kept us informed and always returned our phone calls. He also phoned regularly just to check how we were coping. He was genuinely interested in our late relative's life and stayed for her service of thanksgiving after the cremation. For him, along with Mandy, Nicola and Julie in the office, nothing was too much trouble. They have a caring and reassuring manner which we really appreciated and which certainly helped us cope during a difficult time. Christine Urbanowicz
Harrison’s have always been my family’s choice of funeral directors for decades, so obviously they were my choice when my son died.
First time I’ve had to arrange a funeral myself, and all I can say is they were exceptional and 5 stars isn’t enough.
Jerry from the Gosforth branch was absolutely amazing.
He made you feel like you were the only person at that time who had lost a loved one. His time and his caring attention to detail were second to none.
He went above and beyond for us and my son. Even down the putting an image of my sons pride and joy car on the service booklet and on every page inside it that were on the seats in the church. And also placing the model of his car on top of his coffin, making sure it was just perfect. And also making sure the name plate on his ashes casket was at the front so we could put the car on top of it once we received them. Just so many little touches that meant so much to me.
My son’s boss and company wanted to do a tribute to my son. Jerry asked my permission if he could liaise with them, which I gave. This led to an amazing tribute to my son from his work colleagues, going all up salters road, in which Jerry got out of the car and walked the entire length of the tribute line infront of my son.
I can’t put into words how calm and relaxed he made me feel, considering this is one of the most traumatic times of my life. He took care of everything, even the flowers.
This was all done during Covid restrictions too.
Jerry is a gentleman, and has a true compassion.
He truly is a credit to Harrison’s.
I would also like to thank everyone else behind the scenes, whom I never met in person, but also did an amazing job in making a very emotional day run so smoothly.
Kind regards to you all
Susan.
A massive thank you to Jerry and all the team at W S Harrison, they helped myself and my family through a difficult period and provided first class service from the first meeting to a beautiful service for my mum. Regards Jeremy
Thank you to Jerry, Mandy, Nicola and all the team behind Harrisons Funeral Directors. After losing our mam a few weeks ago, they have been nothing but thoughtful, helpful, professional and courteous. They took great care looking after our mam.
What was a very daunting process to go through, has been made so much easier by everyone at Harrisons. My mams service was taken by Funeral Celebrant Dee Wheatley, who really made our mams memories come alive.
Thank you all once again, and the whole family would 100% recommend Harrisons of Gosforth
Thank you for your thoughtful and detailed review. It is incredibly helpful to other families in the same circumstances as yourself. I am pleased that the arrangements for your Mother were carried out to your satisfaction. We are thankful to the team for making your special day so personal.
