From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

I cannot thank Suzanne enough for all of her help arranging my father’s funeral. All round great experience with her, she made me feel as at ease as I could be planning a funeral, went out of her way to check up on me which I thought was personally such a nice thing to do. The funeral went as good as it could for a funeral and we as a family are very happy and grateful to Suzanne.
Thank you for your wonderful feedback. We are very lucky to have Suzanne as part of the team. Simon
Everything went perfectly, it was the best experience it could have been thank you to Suzanne, Avril and all the staff involved
The whole family would like to say a huge thank you to everyone at Knapps for the wonderful care , dignity and kindness you showed our Mum and the family at this sad time, the whole team showed professionalism and compassion, with special thanks to Suzanne who arranged the funeral, Avril who was their when we came to see Mum and was so kind and caring and Kate who we met at the crematorium, the whole day, although sad, was a lovely celebration of our Mums life and we know she would have been very happy with it, again thank you all so so much
As happens in everyone’s life, the death of a loved one can be emotional, disorientating, and depressing.
Recently, my mother died, and through recommendation, I contacted Knapps to see us through this difficult time.
From the very first contact with Suzanne, I found her to be compassionate, respectful, and quietly efficient. Her manner throughout was calm and she was able to steer me through the choices that had to be made, along with suggestions for the flowers and the memorial service.
On the day of my mothers cremation, our driver showed compassion and understanding, and a willingness to talk if we wanted. This indeed, helped us to defuse the tension.
Mums service was carried out exactly as I requested, The team was beautifully turned out, and treated mum with respect and aplomb showing no sign of rush or hurry throughout. Everything from the music, to the final farewell, was carried out by the whole team in a manner that Mum would have loved.
Sometime after, Suzanne contacted me to see how I was doing and offered me a grief councillor if needed.
I was thoroughly pleased, with Knapps service and would recommend them highly.
I am glad that you and the family were well cared for, and that we were able to provide you with the knowledge and understanding of a difficult situation and make things easier for you. We pride ourselves in maintaining the highest quality of care for our families. Thank you for this positive recommendation, it is greatly appreciated.
The whole experience of organising my husbands funeral was made so much easier because of all
the amazing staff at H.J.Knapp & Sons in Wantage.
The people who came to collect my husband were so lovely, sweet, respectful & careful. I think it was Jess and Mark or Matt.
Suzanne at the office and at the crematorium was wonderful. She was so very helpful, patient, kind and respectful.
They all helped to make the funeral such a joyous & memorable occasion.
It means a great deal when people take the time to share their experience and to highlight individuals in the team who have made a difference. Your kind words mean a great deal to the team who always work very hard to deliver great care. Thank you for entrusting us with the care of your husband.
