From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

Sue at Chadderton branch is just brilliant. Thank you so much for all of your help x She is so lovely. And looked after Tom so well. The Wellens team, on the day, got my whole family through and really looked after us. Thank you, to them also. Would def recommend. Thinking I might use them too, as I know my sons would be in very safe hands at a very emotional time.
Charlies mum
The professionalism and care of Sue at the chadderton branch was of great comfort to our family after losing our dad John Buckley.Thank you.
We lost our grandad so suddenly and really didn't see a way of coping but as we went to s.wellens and sons from walking in and talking to Diane and her team including Anthony the stresses and worries didn't seem as bad of course it was still very painful but Diane went above and beyond to help saying goodbye bearable I have personally never used or heard of s.wellens and sons until the passing of my grandad but would use them again without a doubt and would highly recommend them to anyone I still couldn't put into words how much you helped us and can't thank you enough you all made a day filled with fear, sadness and dread as bearable as it could be I will never forget the care and compassion shown to my grandad and us.
S. Wellens & Sons provided an absolutely incredible service to us for the funeral of my mum, Jean Pleavin. My wife and my daughter met with Dianne to arrange the funeral and she was an absolutely lovely lady and helped give my mum the best send off we could have ever hoped for. Dianne even arranged for the gentlemen that drove the hearse and limousine to wear red ties and for a liverpool flag to be placed over the coffin as my mum was a liverpool football club fan which made the service even more beautiful and was an amazing idea. She also took great care of my mum and made her look very presentable for the chapel of rest, she even added a nice touch by placing a red rose on her chest. I highly recommend this funeral directors as everyone there are amazing, especially Dianne. Thank you for the incredible service and the gentlemen who drove us there and back thank you..
