From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

I would like to say a huge thank you to Gill and Linda at New Moston. It was a very long arrangement with my mom and made all the more difficult with the distance my brother and I lived. The 2 were absolutely fantastic. No matter the issue, they advised. If they didn't know, they immediately asked elsewhere to find the answer. The funeral director and drivers on the day were great too. Thank you very much for an excellent service from all.
Thank you so much to s Wellens funeral directors for being so professional and helpful jill helped us through the process and gave us plenty of support. We also would like to give a big thank you to Deborah who was our celebrationist
Thanks again from Jeff and Julie swatkins

We used S. Wellens for my mother-in-law's funeral in May and were extremely satisfied with the service, so had no hesitation in using them again for my mother's funeral in September. Gill and Linda were very helpful and understanding throughout the whole process, as they were in May. A very professional and caring service.
Thank you for entrusting us with the care of another loved one. I am pleased to hear that you found our staff to be professional and respectful.
From the day my Dad passed away to the day of the funeral (11 days) the staff at Wellens were absolutely amazing. There was a funeral plan in place so i suppose things were a little easier. We were so worried about visiting Dad in the chapel but there was nothing to worry about, they did a marvelous job, we'd not seen him that peaceful in a long time. Thank you.
Your kind words mean a great deal to the team who always work very hard to deliver great care. I am glad that we were able to provide you with the dignity and respect needed at this time.
Arranging a funeral at any time especially our mother is a distressing time for all concerned but Gill and her colleagues at Hollinwood Avenue made us feel very welcome and relaxed as the process of the funeral arrangements were explained to us. From the day of arrangement to the day of the funeral nothing was too much trouble with constant contact and update taking monumental pressure away from the family at this sad time. A very big thank you.
We really appreciate you taking the time out to share your experience online with us. It helps other families in their time of need. It means a great deal when people take the time to share their experience and to highlight individuals in the team who have made a difference. We know how special each person is and aim to convey this in all aspects of our work from the arrangements to the day of the service. The team will be very pleased to hear that their care and support made a difference to your family.
