From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

Can't thank Michele and Abby enough, my son Robert's funeral was done with dignity care and understanding, nothing was to much trouble and everything was done as I'd wanted and more, as with my sister's funeral two years ago I knew I could rely on the day going smoothly and it did, thank you once again .
from start to finish I felt very supported with the organisation of my late mothers funeral.
Michelle maintained mom's wishes throughout, however in doing so also understood my needs and helped keep everyone happy.
Pete on the day was very supportive, so much so that I requested him for the interment of mom's ashes, and Michelle had no quarms in organising that for me.
my family have used Jennings since 1965, and to this date they have always done us proud. Thank you for making a difficult day go as smoothly as it could ever be.
I cannot express enough gratitude for the exceptional service provided by Jennings Funeral Directors during such a difficult time for our family. From the moment they arrived to collect my father from home, they were professional, caring, and respectful. They made sure to explain everything thoroughly of the step to step process.
The arrangements were handled with the utmost care and attention to detail, and they went above and beyond to ensure that everything was taken care of. The chapel of rest provided a peaceful and comforting environment for us to spend our final moments with my father.
On the day of the funeral, despite the rainy weather, the staff were incredibly attentive and made sure that we were accompanied with umbrellas at every point. The journey to the crematorium was beautiful and peaceful, and their respectful demeanor throughout the entire process was truly touching.
I must give a special thank you to Mitchell and the rest of the staff at Jennings for their exceptional service. I highly recommend their services to anyone in need of funeral arrangements. Thank you for providing such a peaceful and perfect final journey for my father.
We contacted Jennings Horsley Fields when my brother sadly passed away. From start to finish the staff here assured us that they would take care of everything and guide my mum and I every step of the way. That’s exactly what they did! I can’t tell you how I’m incredible they were. Nothing was too much trouble, they listened to us and were sympathetic and comforting throughout.
I genuinely believe my brother would not of had the send off he deserved if we had gone elsewhere. They were incredibly respectful to my brother in the chapel of rest and made one of the worst days of my life bearable.
His final journey was beautiful in every way possible thanks to Jennings. Special thanks to Michelle and Holly. My mum and I can’t express our gratitude and we will remember what you did for us forever in our hearts.
Thank you so very much. Louise & Eira. X
