From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

This is the second time our family have used the services of Dignity/Jennings, through Wombourne branch. We found the help and guidance provided to be exceptional. Very professional as you would expect but also very personal and respectful. Alison went above and beyond and for this we were very grateful at such a difficult family time. Thank you.
I am glad that our staff went above and beyond to deliver the service you expected. Thank you for entrusting us with the care of another loved one.
We used Jennings in Codsall. My family have used Jennings for decades and previously have always been happy. My experience this time was awful and means I will not use them again nor recommend them. The problems were numerous. From being unable to reach them on the phone for most of the day after my mother died, to having to deal with a total of four different ladies whilst trying to arrange the funeral, none of whom knew what I had previously arranged so having to go through basic details again and again. Then because I had chosen a simple funeral package they said it had to be at a certain time which was ok for me. I arranged flowers invited guests and produced a printed funeral programme to be phoned by yet another lady who told me the funeral was at a completely different time! I burst into tears and had to wait two hours until she phoned me back and said it was her mistake based on not being able to read the handwriting of the previous lady! The quote was hand written and so scruffy I couldn't believe it when it was e mailed to me. The simply funeral had to be paid for upfront. When I explained we were waiting for probate for moms estate they told me that every penny had to be paid before funeral or else they wouldn't do it!!! No compassion!! My options were they told me to have my mothers body collected to see if I could find another undertaker who would let me pay when probate was granted!! This whole experience made an already very stressful very upsetting bereavement much worse. When I went to pay bill I had to correct them on an overcharge too!

We have been entirely satisfied with the service provided and advice given by Jennings Funeral Directors. We felt assured that everything was in place for the day itself and confident that everything would go according to plan.
Thank you for sharing your experience online. You are helping others to make more informed funeral choices, whatever those may be. The team will be very pleased to hear that their care and support made a difference to your family.
Thank you for your 5* review.
We value the guidance received by the professional and caring staff, Alison and Karen, at the Wombourne branch. Their calm, patient and friendly manner together with their knowledge of the planning ensured that the day of mum's funeral passed as well as one could have wished. We went along with suggestions that they made and couldn't have been more pleased.
We are incredibly grateful that you took the time to leave us this review. It’s good to hear that you and the family received helpful guidance through this time and that we managed to make the day run as smoothly as possible for you.
