From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

I am so glad that I used dilliston& wraights for my mum and dad they were wonderful from start to finish they helped us so much
Thoroughly professional, courteous, considerate and helpful from start to finish. We were particular impressed with Natalie who was so supportive at a difficult time. I would certainly recommend this team to others.
Natalie and her team at the Chichester branch of Dillistone and Wraights did everything possible to make my mother’s Celebration of Life a beautiful and fitting tribute to her. They were very helpful and friendly, and always had time to discuss things with me. The Church service was lovely and the Order of Service was well-designed and nicely printed. Natalie helped to put together the Crematorium ceremony and led it in a very professional manner. Thank you.
This was the 2nd time in 7 years that this wonderful team, supported our Family in giving our loved one a good send off.
Natalie and team made the loss our beloved Mother and Grandmother who was 93, easier to manage at a sad time.
She passed away at home peacefully and Thomas and Chris came to take her to the funeral home. The respect, dignity and compassion they showed both her and us, was warming, even to the point of driving away so slowly in the middle of the night, knowing I was saying goodbye to her as she left her home. Immaculate in their uniforms and a credit to their profession.
Natalie supported us in arranging her funeral, again with compassion and respect, truly understanding everyone’s loved one is uniquely important in them.
Amanda was fantastic in ensuring the order of service was just perfect, no detail was overlooked and it was beautiful.
We followed the hearse, which was spotless, her flowers being carefully placed, as she was escorted by Natalie, passed the farm, she farmed nearly all her life, she would have appreciated that.
We, her family carried her into the service, again were looked after, to ensure everything went smoothly.
We are a big family and her funeral was well attended. We had so many comments about what a beautiful service it was and Natalie and her team really did her and us proud.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
The late, Edna William’s Family x
My wife passed away suddenly on the 21st December 2024.
Dillstones were acting on behalf of the coroner as this was a sudden death.
I was truly disappointed by the fact that one gentleman walked into my house stinking of cigarette smoke. Very noticeable as none of my family smoke and the second gentleman had the flies of his trousers undone. This was more upsetting as I had my 4 year old granddaughter in the room at the time
The smell of smoke and the state of dress certainly put my family and myself off of using them to conduct a funeral for my wife.
I am still coming to terms with my wifes sudden passing and that is the reason for my delay in saying about this.
Thank you for contacting Dignity Funerals Limited and for your review. Firstly, please accept my deepest sympathies for the recent loss of your wife. I’m so sorry to hear you have not had a good experience with Dillistone & Wraights Funeral Directors. Please don’t hesitate to contact our Complaint Resolutions Department if you wish to discuss this further. They can be reached on 0800 783 7171 or via email at complaint.resolutions@dignityuk.co.uk. Thank you.
