From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

I cannot recommend Dillistones in little Hampton enough for when your loved ones pass away. They were all so professional and showed care and compassion from the first phonecall to the day of the funeral. Kirsty one of the staff has been an absolute rock all throughout for our family and couldn't do enough to make sure Dads day was just right. As I didn't live in the area and had to make phone calls and also a visit to the funeral directors from North Wales, Kirsty was always there ready to make time and chat through the arrangements. She made the difficult times easier. I don't believe for one minute they see this profession as a job, it's a vocation that needs a special type of person, and Dillistones have just that. So thank you beautiful people Kirsty and Natalie especially. From Sharon (North Wales)
Very professional throughout and provided guidance and help throughout the process. Great communication and nothing was too much trouble. I would highly recommend.
Excellent service. The staff were excellent and compassionate and dealt with our funeral to our wishes. Would highly recommend.
I am happy that we provided a professional service to you. I am pleased we were able to help make things easier for you at such a difficult time.
We received an excellent service from Sam and the team at Dillistone, Littlehampton. Sam was very professional, friendly, and efficient, always replying to emails and calls very promptly, and giving advice where needed. Gerald (lead pallbearer) rang the day before the funeral to talk through what would happen on the day, and this was much appreciated. Everything on the day went perfectly. Thank you!
Thank you for the kind comments posted on your online review. I am pleased to hear that you found our staff to be professional and respectful. I am pleased that you had the trust and confidence in our team to be able to deliver the service you expected. It is good to know that we managed to make the day run as smoothly as possible for you.
At what was a terrible time for myself, and the added disappointment with Silver Cloud Funeral Plans, Samantha at the branch went above and beyond to assist me. I probably wasn’t the easiest of clients to deal with, this due to circumstances out of our control, and no way directed at Dilistones. Samantha displayed nothing but kindness and understanding and has the patience of a Saint. My gratitude to her always.
Thank you for your 5 star review Ms Elliot. I am very sorry for you loss but I am pleased you feel you were looked after when you needed it most. Kindest Regards.
