From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

Tash really excelled herself while supporting myself and my family after the death of my husband. She made arranging a funeral completely stress free and we were all welcome to visit the chapel of rest. The funeral was really lovely and the Rev Melanie Sopp who had been recommended to us was faultless and wonderful.
I would highly recommend Dillistones, thank you so much,Tash, Neve and Melanie. xx
I am pleased that we provided the highest level of care and guidance for you and your family. It means a great deal when people take the time to share their experience and to highlight individuals in the team who have made a difference. Thank you for this positive recommendation, it is greatly appreciated.
Jane at Dillistones is a lovely lady, and honestly so incredibly organised. Her attention to detail in confirming all the details for the funeral last Friday was wonderful. She is a consummate professional, where nothing is too much trouble. Michael the Funeral Director is the most compassionate, careful, professional gentleman, who looked after all the guests at the crematorium to the very best standard. All in all, a fabulous team. You are in very safe hands with Dillistones.
Words cannot express how grateful we are to Dillistones Worthing who were holding Mums funeral for us.
The moment we met Jane we knew we were in good hands, she guided us through all the details for the service with such warmth, I immediately felt at ease.
On the day Michael and his team were very professional, taking us through every step of the service and managed to keep our bagpiper George out of sight, until he met us in the drive to lead us into the chapel.
On leaving the Chapel after saying our goodbyes
We were then driven on to the Wake with our funeral flowers.
Thank you all very much for making Mum's last journey so special for us.
5 stars somehow doesn’t do it justice.
To everyone at Dilistone Worthing, thank you. For what could have been an incredible difficult time, we as a family were made to feel welcome and at ease.
The professionalism was second to none and Natalie now feels like one of the family. Nothing was ever too much trouble and to have Natalie leading my father’s funeral was amazing. All of her team were effortless with their care and attention and we feel truly blessed to have chosen this company to give dad the best send off possible.
If I could give Dillistones in South Farm Road, Worthing a hundred stars then I would. The care, compassion and service we received was exemplary. From the moment I called them and spoke to Natalie I knew I had found the company that would manage my husband's funeral. Her professionalism and kindness is just amazing. Our whole family felt wrapped in love. Yesterday she led my husband"s funeral and I felt at peace knowing he was in such caring and safe hands.
Thank you Natalie and your team. You have been amazing!
