From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

Mark at Granville Brookes is exceptional
Thank you Paul for your lovely words regarding Mark our Funeral Directors, the team are delighted you found our services exceptional. We wish you all the best for the future months ahead.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Granville Brooks. From contacting them after my mum Doreen passed away, to the collecting of her ashes, Mark and his team were extremely supportive, respectful, friendly and professional. Nothing was too much trouble and they were in regular contact every step of the way.
I first used Granville Brooks over 15 years ago and even though the staff may have changed over the years, their service is still as good now as it was then.
Thank you Mark and team for all your help.
Thank you Sue for your lovely words about Mark and the team regarding how professional, respectful, friendly and supportive they were throughout every step of the way regarding your mum's funeral. Our team always feel honoured to help and support families in there time of need. We are glad that our services and standards are still the same as 15 years ago and we appreciate your 5 star review. As a team we love to hear feedback from our clients, but more importantly your kind words will help another family choose the right funeral director when there time comes. We hope you find comfort in the months ahead knowing that you did your Mum proud in her final send off.
